Sanctuary Wentworth Point - Phase 1

Location: Wangal Country | Wentworth Point, Australia

Client: Sekisui House

Status: 2017 - 2021

Team: With Turf Design Studio, Turner

Landing by Sekisui House was the first stage of the Sanctuary masterplan, located along the waterfront at Wentworth Point. Part of a ten-year vision due to be completed by 2030. Landing was delivered in a phased approach, with 364 one, two, and three bedroom dwellings across four buildings of varying heights. Surrounded by water to the north, and protected by parklands and wetlands to the west, the site called for a specific landscape approach.

The public domain and landscape of the Landing creates a strong dialogue between the fluidity of the upper Parramatta River, Architectural forms, and the ‘podium topography’. Substantial levels changes are choreographed into a sequence of fluid terraces and viewing decks that amplify the riverine context. A series of incised ponds and cascading waterfalls serve to both activate and calm the landscape. The podium landscape, built over a podium wide soil vault, serves as an urban sponge to soak up rainfall whilst providing unrestricted lateral tree root growth that will serve to develop well-formed healthy future trees unrestricted by typical planter boxes. The result - a rich, liveable urban landscape of movement, pause, and crescendo - by the river.
