A State Significant project located at the southern end of the Olympic Park Parkview Precinct and part of the Sydney Olympic Park Master Plan 2030 forms a significant contribution toward connecting Olympic Park with the adjacent Bicentennial Park through the construction of a rail line underpass and a new land bridge across Benelong Parkway.
The site has a long and inglorious history housing chemical waste and up until 1976 was used to manufacture the ingredients for Agent Orange, a powerful herbicide. Though somewhat remediated as part of redeveloping the area for the 2000 Olympic Games site remediation remained a requirement for the development. In addition stormwater flows from Olympic Park pass through the site on their way to the Parramatta River. These complex enviornmental factors were resolved in the Master Plan - the impetus of which was the development of the $128 million dollar 392 apartment Opal Tower which accommodates 3,000 residents, a retail precinct and childcare centre for 80 children. The unique triangular-shaped tower was designed by Bates Smart and developed by Ecove Group, and built by Icon.
