Sydney University Camperdown Public Domain

Location: Gadigal Country | Sydney, Australia

Client: Sydney University

Status: 2004 - 2009

Team: With Turf Design Studio & JAAA

A $13 million / 13,000m2 upgrade of the University’s Camperdown public domain including transformation of the vehicular Eastern Avenue into a pedestrianised central campus spine, upgrade to the curtilage of the historic “Quad” building, Fisher Library, Chemistry Building, Anderson Stuart building and a new Faculty of Law podium forecourt.

The project combines the timelessness of medieval European university squares and cloisters with the freshness of Sydney vegetation in a formal context of a heritage significant precinct. The scheme is dignified in both scale and detailing showing restraint that belies the difficulty of unifying diverse university spaces and the complex subterranean sinuous matrix of services.
