Taronga Wildlife Retreat

Location: Cammeraigal Country | Sydney, Australia

Client: Taronga Zoo

Status: 2014 - 2021

Team: With Green & Dale, Turf Design Studio, Cox Architects

The $164.5 million dollar retreat builds on existing overnight conservation experiences like Roar and Snore at Taronga Zoo and Zoofari Lodge at Taronga Western Plains Zoo. There is increasing demand for immersive wildlife experiences and they are proven to influence people’s attitudes and behaviours. During a 24-hour stay, visitors can experience unprecedented close-up encounters with Australian animals and enjoy tours and talks within the Australian landscape including morning and evening animal encounters.

Our design was developed with Green and Dale Landscape Architects and Cox Architects, and is set within a series of five, 2-4 storey, 62 guest accommodation pods. Exhibit spaces offer interaction with a range of native animals including wallabies, echidnas, bandicoots, platypus, koalas and freshwater eels.

Visitors to the new habitat are also be immersed in the diverse cultures of

Australia’s Indigenous communities, all on the shores of Cammeraigal country.

The design mimics a natural 'bushwalk' setting which winds along a cascading creek line and through a 4m waterfall with opportunity to engage with animals or relax at custom seating locations.
